Taylor, I enjoyed this post. I think you hit the mark. I think what is also important, and this goes along with everything you said, is to have an idea what you are looking to experience and to put yourself into that situation.

When I lived in Ferrara, Italy in spring 2006, I found a culture not very different from America. I mean, other than the complete lack of what we would call "work ethic", I lived in a western society with ample resources in a clean, non-overpopulated location. I gained a rich insight into a culture that has contributed so much to the American version, and got to see it all first hand.

I will agree that the experience would have been half as profound if I had not had local friends. Spending time with Italians and seeing the world through their eyes is what transported me...not the airplane.

I think wherever you go, you can have a meaningful experience. But certainly, if you desire to experience a culture that grew from a completely different primordial mold than America, don't fool yourself into thinking that anything in western Europe is going to fit the bill.
